As a dietitian, I have a passion for helping people eat healthier and to lead healthier lives. I have always taken an approach to nutrition that I would rather focus on the wonderful foods that we can have rather than only on the foods that are “forbidden”. Very few foods are completely off limits, but so many can be enjoyed with great preparation in ways that we may never have thought of before. Here are a few healthful food tips and some great links to valuable information on some of my favorite websites…ENJOY!
Food Smarts:
Salmon Farmed or Wild?
**Did you know that farm-raised salmon contain 13 times more cancer-causing pollutants than salmon caught in the wild. Since the bulk of the contaminants are stored in fish fat, you can eliminate them by removing the skin and grilling thoroughly – but this also reduces the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Nutritional Champs!!
**All bell peppers are deliciously healthy because they’re low in calories and high in vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. But when green peppers are ripened to red they become true nutritional champs by supplying a generous dose of lycopene and 50 percent more vitamin C as well.
Believe or Not!?
Butter is the better choice. Both butter and margarine are high in calories and saturated fat but traditional margarines also deliver two to three grams of artery busting trans fats per tablespoon. A recent slew of new heart-smart margarines are trans fat free and can actually help lower cholesterol.
Healthy links:
I believe one of our best defenses against chronic disease and disability is to be educated about our risks and ways that we can improve our own health. Many organizations provide invaluable information over the internet that can be very useful in learning about the latest research, great health and diet tips, and recipes. Here is a sampling of some of my favorite websites that have some great tips and information that I know you can appreciate as much as I do:
The American Heart Association: www.americanheart.org
The American Cancer Association: www.cancer.org
The American Diabetes Association: www.diabetes.org
The American Dietetics Association: www.eatright.org
KIDSHEALTH: www.kidshealth.org
(this is a great website for tips on everything from parenting to weight management and recipes for kids and teens, Awesome!!)
**There are mountains of clinical studies that prove that unhealthy eating and physical inactivity are risk factors for the leading causes of death in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, unhealthy eating, obesity, and physical inactivity directly contribute to deaths and disability caused by Heart Disease, Cancer, Stroke, Diabetes, and High Blood Pressure. Most alarming, obesity among children and teens has actually doubled in the past two decades putting their generation at an increased risk for all of these devastating diseases.
Don’t let one of these diseases take you or anyone you love!!!
